Mario Botta

Born on April 1, 1943 in Mendrisio, Switzerland. Upon completing compulsory schooling, he took an apprenticeship as a draftsman at the studio of architects Carloni and Camenisch in Lugano, then attended the arts high school in Milan, and finished his studies at the Istituto Universitario d’Architettura di Venezia, graduating in 1969 with Carlo Scarpa and Giuseppe Mazzariol as his supervisors. Returning to Ticino in 1970, he opened his first studio in Lugano, where he remained until 2011, when he moved back to Mendrisio. From the outset of his career, he has always combined his design work with a commitment to teaching and educating, with conferences, seminars, and courses at architecture schools in Europe, Asia, the U.S. and Latin America. In 1996, within the sphere of the creation of the Università della Svizzera Italiana founded that year, he was among the initiators of the Academy of Architecture of Mendrisio where he taught until 2018 and has twice been the Director, receiving the title of Professor Emeritus in 2019. In 2006 he became President of the Jury for the BSI Architectural Award (now the Swiss Architectural Award), established with the support of the BSI Architectural Foundation and the Academy of Architecture of Mendrisio. Since 2016 he has been the President of the Technical Commission in charge of planning exhibitions at the Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome.His work has been recognized with important awards and has been presented in many exhibitions.After his first single-family houses in Ticino, his work has encompassed all building typologies: schools, banks, administrative buildings, libraries, museums, churches and synagogues.
